MTConnect

Also called: OPC UA

MTConnect is an open standard for reading CNC machine data (status, program, alarms, part count) without depending on the builder.

MTConnect is a free, open protocol that defines how a machine tool publishes its data: whether it is executing, which program is running, feed rate, alarms and part count. Because the vocabulary is standardized, the same software can read a lathe from one brand and a machining center from another.

How it works

The machine (or an adapter installed on it) sends data to an agent, which exposes everything as XML over HTTP on the local network. The monitoring system queries the agent and turns events into states, times and KPIs. Another common standard is OPC UA, broader and also used on PLCs and robots. When a machine supports neither, the fallback is reading electrical signals (spindle current, stack light) with a small I/O module.

Practical example

In a shop with controls from different brands, each machine gets an MTConnect adapter. One dashboard then shows all of them with the same status colors and calculates OEE with the same rule, with no spreadsheet per brand.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every machine ships with MTConnect: many need a software option or adapter.
  • Exposing the agent to the internet unprotected; it should stay on the plant network.
  • Collecting dozens of variables before deciding which KPIs will be used.

FAQ

MTConnect or OPC UA?

Both work. MTConnect focuses on machine tools and has a ready vocabulary; OPC UA is more generic and common in automation. The choice depends on what your controls already support.
