Setting Up Google Ads Conversions: Forms, Calls and WhatsApp
Google Ads conversion tracking for B2B: track form submissions, click-to-chat and phone calls using Google Tag Manager and GA4, with steps and testing tips.

Good Google Ads conversion tracking means tagging every action on your site that represents a sales contact and sending that signal back to Google. For B2B companies the three key actions are form submissions, click-to-chat clicks and phone calls. Without them your campaign optimizes in the dark and you cannot tell what pays off.
What you need before you start
- Google Tag Manager installed on the site.
- A connected Google Analytics 4 property.
- A Google Ads account linked to GA4.
- Access to edit the site or the tag manager.
Step by step: contact form
- In Tag Manager, enable the built-in form and click variables.
- Create a trigger that fires only on a successful submission, for example when the success message appears or when the form plugin pushes its event.
- Avoid firing on a plain visit to the thank-you page if it can be opened directly.
- Create a GA4 event, named something like generate_lead, tied to that trigger.
- In Google Ads, go to Goals, Conversions, create a new conversion and import the GA4 event, or use the Google Ads conversion tag in GTM.
- Set a value if useful and mark it as a primary conversion.
Step by step: WhatsApp or chat click
- Identify the button by its link, which contains wa.me or api.whatsapp.com.
- In GTM, create a link click trigger with that condition on the URL.
- Tie the trigger to a GA4 event called, for example, click_whatsapp.
- Create the conversion in Google Ads from that event.
- If floating buttons load via script, use GTM preview to find the right selector.
Keep in mind that a chat click is not a conversation started. It is a useful signal, but check how many clicks become actual messages.
Step by step: phone calls
There are three routes. The first tracks clicks on phone links, which suits mobile well. The second uses Google Ads call assets, which record calls from the ad with a configurable minimum duration. The third is a tracking number on the site, when you need the exact source.
Set a minimum duration, such as 30 to 60 seconds, so wrong numbers are not counted as conversions.
Test before you trust it
- Use GTM preview mode to confirm the tag fires once per action.
- Check GA4 real-time reports to see the event arrive with the expected parameters.
- Submit the form for real and watch the conversion appear in Google Ads within a few hours.
- Verify that the conversion status reads as active or recording.
Practices that make tracking worthwhile
Choose one or two primary conversions for optimization and keep the rest secondary. This stops the algorithm from rewarding low-value actions. Review your cookie consent setup, since without it part of the data can be lost.
The next level is tying real sales back to the ad. For help with implementation, see our paid ads service, and for the site itself our websites team handles events and forms.
What to check at the end
After two weeks, compare Google Ads conversions with the contacts that actually reached sales. A big gap points to a duplicate event or a trigger that is too broad. Adjust and validate again.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need GTM to track conversions?
It is not mandatory, but it helps a lot. It lets you create and adjust triggers without editing site code every time.
How long until a conversion shows in Google Ads?
Usually a few hours, but it can take up to a day. Avoid concluding it is broken before waiting.
Does a WhatsApp click count as a lead?
As a signal of interest, yes, but track how many clicks become real conversations to understand quality.
