Google Ads Quality Score is a 1 to 10 rating given to each keyword that estimates the quality of your ads and landing page. It feeds into auction ranking and, in practice, how much you pay per click: a higher score tends to cost less to hold the same position. Treat it as a diagnostic tool, not a goal in itself.
The three components of Quality Score
Each keyword gets a status (above average, average or below average) on three items. You can see them by adding the Quality Score columns to your keyword table.
- Expected CTR: the estimated chance that your ad is clicked when shown for that keyword.
- Ad relevance: how closely the ad text matches the search.
- Landing page experience: relevance, clarity and ease of use of the page.
How to improve expected CTR
Expected CTR depends on click history and ad position. To lift it, write headlines that read like the answer to the search, not a slogan. Someone searching for laser cut 304 stainless steel plate wants to see exactly that, with thicknesses or lead time.
- Put the keyword or a close variation in a headline.
- Add a concrete differentiator, such as lead time, standard or certification.
- Use ad assets (sitelinks, calls, snippets) to take up more space.
- Pause generic keywords that attract many impressions and few clicks.
How to improve ad relevance
The common mistake is lumping many different keywords into one ad group with one set of ads. Relevance drops because the ad cannot speak to everything. The fix is to group by a narrow theme: one group per product, application or service, with 5 to 15 similar keywords.
A practical test: if you need very generic headlines to cover the group’s keywords, the group is too big. Split it.
How to improve landing page experience
The page must continue the ad’s promise. Check that the search topic appears in the title and first paragraph, that the page loads fast on mobile, and that the form is simple. Pages with vague content, aggressive pop-ups or slow loading drag this rating down. A well-structured industrial website with one page per service usually helps a lot.
What Quality Score is not
It is not a business KPI. A 10 that produces clicks without quotes is worse than a 6 that produces orders. It is also not computed in real time for every auction: the number you see is a summary, and Google uses its own live assessment each time. Use the score to find problems, not to optimize the number itself.
A monthly optimization routine
- Filter keywords scoring below 5 with meaningful spend.
- Identify which component is below average.
- Act on that component: rewrite the ad, split the group or improve the page.
- Wait for enough data, usually a few weeks, before judging the change.
- Pause keywords that stay weak and do not convert.
This steady work is part of managing paid ads, and it usually lowers cost per click over the months without raising budget.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Quality Score?
Scores from 7 to 10 are considered good. Still, prioritize conversions: an average score with strong returns beats a high score with no results.
Does Quality Score affect CPC?
Yes, along with your bid and the expected impact of assets. Generally, higher scores let you pay less for the same position.
Why does a new keyword have no score?
It needs to accumulate impressions. Until there is enough data, the score shows as unavailable.
