Featured Snippets for B2B: Win Technical Questions
Featured snippets for B2B industry sites: how to format short answers, lists and tables to win position zero for technical questions buyers search before quoting.

A featured snippet is the highlighted answer Google shows at the top of results. In industry, it appears for questions like “what is rated torque” or “how to size an air compressor”. Winning it has less to do with tricks and more with answering clearly, in a format Google can extract.
Pick the right questions
Look for questions your customer asks before requesting a quote. Good sources: Google’s “People also ask” box, the Search Console queries report, and the questions your sales team hears every week.
Prioritize questions where you already rank in the top ten. It is easier to move up to the highlight than to start from zero.
Format 1: the definition paragraph
For “what is” questions, write a 40 to 60 word answer directly under the heading that stands on its own. Repeat the term from the question and give the definition without a warm-up. Then expand on the topic in the rest of the page.
Format 2: numbered list for procedures
“How to” questions call for steps. Use a heading with the question and a numbered list of 5 to 8 items, each starting with a verb. Google tends to extract the list when every step is short and clear.
- Measure the required process flow.
- Define the working pressure.
- Apply the safety margin.
- Compare the result against the equipment curve.
Format 3: tables for comparisons and specs
When the question involves values, such as power ranges per model, a simple HTML table (not an image) is the best bet. Keep columns few, headers clear and units explicit. The same table helps human readers compare materials or models.
Details that improve your odds
- Use the question text as the H2 or H3, without over-rewording it.
- Answer in the first paragraph after the heading, with no long intro.
- Keep the page fast and readable on mobile.
- Reference standards and technical data correctly and double-check values.
- Add FAQ structured data only if the questions are visible on the page.
Text structure is part of building a good industrial website: page templates with answer blocks, lists and tables make it easy to repeat the pattern across all technical content.
Realistic expectations
Nobody controls snippets: Google decides and can swap the page holding the spot at any time. In some searches the highlight even reduces clicks, because the answer is already on screen. Judge success by commercially relevant queries, not by how many position-zero spots you hold.
A sample answer page
Take the question “what is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel”. The page opens with two sentences that answer it (316 contains molybdenum and resists chlorides better), continues with a table of recommended applications and closes with selection criteria by environment. Each block has a format Google can extract, and the human reader finds what they need in seconds.
After publishing, watch the page for a few weeks and adjust the answer if another page takes over the highlight.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to rank first to win the snippet?
Not necessarily, but first-page pages have an edge. Ranking in the top ten already puts you in the running.
How do I know if I hold any featured snippets?
Search the question in an incognito window and check the top of the results. SEO tools can also list a domain’s snippets.
Do featured snippets bring more leads?
They can raise visibility, but the effect varies. On simple informational questions clicks may drop; on commercial questions they usually help.
